About Seritourism 

Silk

Historical evidence shows that silk was discovered in China and later the industry spread into other parts of the world.  According to Chinese records, the discovery of silk happened around 2640 BC. It is evident from history that the silk industry spread into India around 140 BC from China, through Tibet.            

Sericulture in India

            India is the only country in the world to produce all the four known varieties of silk, viz., Mulberry, Eri, Tasar and Muga. Among the four varieties of silk produced, Mulberry accounts for 69.09%, Tasar 9.4%, Eri 20.8% and Muga  0.59%  of the total raw silk production of 31,931 Metric Tonnes during 2017-2018.

 

Sericulture in Tamil Nadu

            Tamil Nadu is the leading State in bivoltine silk production. The handloom silk sarees including Kancheepuram silk sarees produced in Tamil Nadu are world famous because of their enchanting craftsmanship. Venpattu dhoties produced in Salem are very unique and have got authorization to use geo-index number.

 

Seri Tourism

Tourism is termed as an instrument for employment generation, poverty alleviation and sustainable human development. Seri tourism is the promotion of tourism compiled with creation of awareness to the tourists about all the sericultural activities right from mulberry cultivation to the production of Silk fabrics (Soil to Silk)

 

Why Yercaud

            Yercaud is is named owing to the abundance of forest near the lake a hill station in Salem District, in Tamil Nadu, India. It is located in the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats. It is situated at an altitude of 1515 meters (4970 ft) above sea level, and the highest point in Yercaud is the Shervaroyan temple, at 5,326 feet (1,623 m). The hill station, the name signifying Lake Forest

Yercaud is one of the most famous Tourist place in Tamilnadu. So it is visited by more number of peoples from all parts of Tamilnadu and other States nearby. And also tourists from abroad visits Yercaud. Because of these reasons Department of Sericulture, Tamilnadu has established Seritourism Center in Yercaud.

The nearest city is Salem, 32 kms away. The State owned Transport Corporation, TNSTC Salem, operates buses from Yercaud to major cities.
