Mulberry Garden

1. Mulberry Expansion 

During the year 2009-2010 an extent of 5669 acres has been brought under mulberry cultivation, against the annual target of 9,300 acres, under various schemes upto October 2009. The Annual Performance in respect of mulberry area expansion for the last five years is shown in the Table-1

2. Silkworm Seed Production and supply

The production and supply of disease free silkworm seed is continued as the main activity. Against the target of 140.00 lakhs layings for the year 2008-2009 a quantity of 76.992 lakh layings has been supplied to the rearers upto October 2009.

 

The annual performance is shown in Table -2

 

3. Cocoon Production

A quantity of 4997.60 Metric tons of Silkworm cocoon was produced upto the end of October, 2009, against the target of 9250 Metric tons, out of which 1699 Metric tons of cocoons were transacted in Government cocoon markets. The performance of cocoon production and market transactions are shown in Tables – 3 & 4 respectively

4. Raw Silk Production

A quantity of 706.913 Metric tons of raw silk was produced against the target of 1350 Metric tons upto the end of October, 2009. The performance of raw silk production in the State is shown in Table -5.

5. Employment Generation.

During the year 2009-2010 against the target of employment generation for 37,500 persons, 28,345 have been covered. The employment generation for five years is indicated graphically in Table – 6.

 

6. Government Anna Silk Exchange, Kancheepuram

During the year 2009-2010 the Government Anna Silk exchange, Kancheepuram transacted 86.501 Metric tons of raw silk against the target of 150.00 Metric tons. The performance of the Government Anna Silk Exchange is shown in Table - 7.

 

7. TANSILK, Kancheepuram.

TANSILK is the Apex Silk Marketing Co-operative Federation  transacting raw and ready silk yarn and supplying to the Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies and Khadi and Village Industries Board. It has purchased 261.425 Metric tons and sold 264.681 Metric tons of silk upto October, 2009,  against   the   target   of  350.00   Metric  tons  for  the year 2008-2009. The performance of TANSILK for the past five years is detailed in Table - 8.

 

ASSISTANCE PROPOSED FOR THE YEAR 2009-2010

The farmers will be motivated to plant high yielding mulberry varieties like V1, S36, to raise productivity and increase returns.

 

Details of V1 mulberry seed availability will be informed to farmers and extension staff will assist farmers to plant high yielding mulberry variety.

 

The farmers will be trained to take up bivoltine Sericulture and they will be supplied with CSR hybrid layings.

 

The Silk reelers will be trained for skill upgradation in processing and preservation of bye products for value addition.

 

In order to take up bivoltine technology the farmers will be trained by conducting awareness meets on requirements, and exposure visits to learn bivoltine sericulture practices.

 

Women members’ participation is more in sericulture activities and they will be provided with assistance under various programmes such as cultivation of high yielding mulberry variety, training in bivoltine crops, installation of drip irrigation system, construction of separate rearing houses and procurement of improved rearing equipments.

 

Necessary assistance will be provided to oppressed classes namely SCs / STs / BCs / MBCs for their economic development through Sericulture.

 

Assistance will be provided for adopting water saving technology like drip irrigation.

All Schemes Supply of layings

Layings will be supplied on cost basis

All new farmers planting mulberry during the financial year are eligible for availing the financial assistance, as well as technical guidance provided by the Department of Sericulture. The farmers and reelers may approach the Assistant Inspector of Sericulture of the Technical Service Centers concerned or the Assistant Director of Sericulture of particular jurisdiction / District for any assistance or information.
